Public Reference Herbarium

click to enlargeThe Botanical Resource Centre (BRC) houses a collection of dried plant reference specimens which represents the native and naturalised plants of the A.C.T., the Southern Tablelands, Australian Alps and the South Coast. This self-help collection is available for use by students, plant surveyors and people who just want to know more about plants. The plants are mounted in plastic sleeves in loose-leafed books to make them more robust for public use.

The Botanical Resource Centre is jointly managed by the ANBG, the Friends of the ANBG and the Herbarium and is open daily. It is located next to the Friends' Lounge on the Main Path. It is recommended that you contact one of the team of 'Facilitators' before you first use the BRC. This facility also has a microscope, access to an extensive library of botanical books and a computer with interactive identification tools and links to the Internet to help make the process of identifying plants easier.

Appointment for use: ANBG Visitor Centre (02) 6250 9540

Reference Herbaria are also available at Booderee Botanic Gardens in Jervis Bay and the Australian Tropical Herbarium in Cairns, north Queensland. These collections provide a plant identification resource for plants of their respective local areas. Please contact these organisations directly for more information on these reference herbaria.

2008 Report

Maintenance of the Public Reference Herbarium (PRH) has continued, with usage of the collection by the public remaining largely unchanged. The PRH remains at 1850 taxa, 58% of the estimated total of 3160 in the geographic area covered. The move of the PRH to the ‘Botanical Resource Centre’ in the ANBG managed jointly with the Friends of the ANBG has served to revitalise the PRH.
