Born in Gorinchem, Netherlands in 1931; died in Curramore, Queensland, 8 October 2022, aged 91.
Educated at Utrecht University, majoring in plant geography; Dr.’s thesis (1961, published 1963) on vegetation and soil of a white-sand savanna in Suriname, South America.
From October 1961 with CSIRO, Div. of Land Research, as plant ecologist in the New Guinea section. He carried out natural resources reconnaissance surveys, and more specialized research into the vegetation of monsoonal Papua.
After his focus on PNG, he undertook research on coastal vegetation and a range of other topics in Australia.

Euphorbia heyligersiana is named in his honour.
