Born 1920.
In 1972 he was Experimental Officer, CSIRO, Division of Forest Products.
After qualifying as a mechanical engineer he worked on aeronautical research at CSIRO until 1946.
He
joined CSIRO, again in 1949 to study railway sleeper breakdown; transferring to timber
preservation soon after, he specialised in methods and design of equipment for the preservative treatment of poles, posts and sawn timber.
He developed the low-pressure process for
treating hardwood posts and was closely associated with commercial timber treatment
since it started in 1957.
In 1960 he visited Thailand to help establish a plant to treat transmission poles.
Publications include papers and articles on structural timber design, pole and
timber treatment and the applications of treated timber.
Other interests include conservation,
sculpture and bird watching.
Most of his plant collections appear to be fungi likely to attack wood.
