He went to Applecross Senior High School, WA.

1985-1986, Bachelor's Degree, (botany and biogeography), James Cook University, (JCU).

1988-1999, Resource Ranger, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

1999-2011, Principal Botanist, Queensland Herbarium.

2000-Present, Retired.

Australian botanist best known as a prolific Acacia collector.

Specialties:
- Regional ecosystems and remnant / non-remnant vegetation interpretation throughout north and central Queensland.
- Vegetation (regional ecosystem) mapping.
- Very wide knowledge of native plant species, especially in north Queensland and Southwest Western Australia.
- Keen interest in rare or threatened plants and invasive alien species.
- Keen interest in fire, grazing and other ecological impacts on the natural environment.

Botanical photographer; 62 000+ photos on Flickr, mostly botanical.

Active in the field collecting botanical specimens between 1981 and 1992, primarily across Western Australia (Avon region) and Queensland (South Kennedy).

He is honoured in the plant name: Acacia cummingiana Maslin, B.R. (1995):

"Named after Russell Cumming in recognition of his contribution to the taxonomy of southwestern Australian Acacia species through his field observations and numerous collections".
