Born on 16 October 1924 at Griffith, NSW; died on 8 March 2010 at Yowie Bay, NSW.
His father, Thomas had emigrated from County Waterford, Ireland, in 1912 but within a few years found himself back in Europe as part of the AIF on the Somme where he survived for more than 2 years.
On his father's return he was awarded a soldier settler's block at Yenda within what was to become the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area.
Dick was born at Griffith in October, 1924. Sadly, his mother died in childbirth one year later and he was taken back to Brooklyn where he was looked after by his mother's family. His father married again, this time Janie's younger sister, Geordie. They returned to Yenda where Tom, Heath and Pat were born.
Yenda public school provided his primary education.
His secondary schooling was at Yanco Agricultural high School, 1937-1941. He was House Captain, School Captain and Dux of the school.
After graduation in agricultural science fruom Sydney University in 1946 he joined the Soil Conservation Service of New South Wales as Research Officer
and Botanist locally in charge of rescarch and extension in Western New South Wales.
In 1957 he was appointed Senior Soil Conservationist, Head Ofice, Sydney, as editor of the Soil
Conservation Service journal and in charge of research stations.
In 1962, appointed Special
Soil Conservationist in charge of the Service's activities in catchment area investigations, coastal
sand drift and arid zone research and extension in Western New South Wales.
From 1972 he was Assistant Commisioner, Western Lands Commision of New
South Wales.
He was a
was member of a team of soil conservationists from the New South Wales Soil Conservation
Service which carried out a survey of erosion problems in central Australia for the Northern
Territory Administration from 1965 to 1967.
